Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. Research has shown DBT to be an effective form of therapy for those with Borderline Personality Disorder, intense mood swings, eating disorders, and drug and alcohol abuse.
DBT involves individual therapy and, in most cases, group skills training classes. People with self-harming behaviors will be required to participate in both. DBT teaches skills to manage emotions and improve relationships.
The DBT Program traditionally involves one year of building and practicing life skills, a second year of addressing past trauma, and a third year of improving quality of life. However, it can be shortened to fit an individual’s needs. I currently provide individual DBT therapy for adolescents and adults and DBT Skills Training groups for teens.
